Joey Toler; An extrordinary Advocate for the Arts

I was visiting North Carolina to investigate the countryside for blog material, when I ran across Joey Toler, Executive Director of the Beaufort County Arts Council in Washington, NC.
The Arts Council is located in an historic train depot in the middle of this charming town!  I took a picture from the back of the building to give you an idea of what the train depot looked like.

I had heard of Joey as a committed advocate for the Arts in Beaufort County-and this turned out to be more than true!  I was very impressed with the width and span of his program.  While Little Washington is a fabulous and beautiful town, it has become, under Joey's leadership, a veritable HUB of arts activities.

In a time in our society when arts programs of all kinds are suffering massive cuts and our children are being taught only sports and sciences are important, Joey's devotion to diversity in the medium, his openness and goodwill to all expressions of art, make his council an oasis for Artists in the desert of our times.

Annual events include Fine Art Shows, Traditional Music Festivals, Juried Photography Shows, Holiday Artisan Craft Events, a Member's Exhibition and Student Art Shows.

This photo is from the gift shop, where local potters, painters, metalworkers, silkscreeners and more may sell their work.  Proceeds from the sales in this shop funded a high school senior's scholarship to art school this past year!

The current show is a juried photography event.  I was very impressed with the gallery space.

It shows what one dedicated person can achieve.  Please post a link to this blog on your facebook page so others will see this man's dedication to his town and the arts!

Here is a link to the organization.

We all need to recognize the heroes of the arts community and thank them for all that they do!

More Later,
